Staff Product Design (Mechanical) Engineer

Our mission is to move humanity off of fossil fuel heating. 20% of US global warming emissions come from homes (that’s more than cars!). The largest driver of home emissions is burning fossil fuels for heat. To stop climate change, over 80M US homes need to transition from combustion to efficient, electric heat pumps over the coming decades.

We believe for this to happen the world needs fantastic products that are easy to purchase. Today's heat pumps lack great design, make limited use of software, and are difficult and stressful to adopt. We are building a next generation, beautifully designed, AI optimized home heating and cooling system that is 10x better than what is on the market today.

Our founders recently left Google, where they had highly successful careers across engineering, design, and product management. We are backed by some of the best climate tech and AI investors in the world.

Quilt is looking for an mission-driven, seasoned engineer to lead product design for our core ductless heat pump product. This role will report directly to Quilt’s CTO.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
- 7+ years experience developing and shipping hardware products.
- Have shipped consumer products with very high quality bars.
- Experience working on 0 to 1 first products.
- Experience working with partners and suppliers in Asia. 
- Spoken Chinese (Mandarin) language skills would be a very strong bonus. 
- Ability to inspire, create a strong culture, and recruit top talent.
- Passion for electrification and home automation
- Strong mission alignment around climate and decarbonization
- Strong experience with Solidworks or equivalent CAD packages
- Thrive in ambiguity and are excited to wear many hats and do what is needed to ship a groundbreaking product.

Responsibilities

- Overall mechanical lead for Quilt’s upcoming ductless heat pump product, both indoor units (IDU) and outdoor unit (ODU). 
- Driving innovation and making hard tradeoffs between performance, cost, noise, packaging, manufacturing, and other constraints. 
- Building a close, collaborative relationship with our joint development and manufacturing partners in Asia. 
- Working very closely with other members of the product development team at Quilt including Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Reliability, Product Management and Operations
- Being a cultural leader within the company, setting a high bar for excellence and creating an inclusive environment.
