High Voltage Power Electronics Engineer
Avalanche is a Seattle-based VC-backed start-up developing micro fusion reactors for clean energy generation and decarbonizing the economy. The small, modular design allows for various power applications and rapid design iterations. The company is seeking a self-motivated Power Electronics Engineer for their Seattle facility to help build, test and develop high voltage power conversion systems to support the HVDC needs of our fusion reactor. The ideal candidate should be able to collaborate with a small team and be able to pivot between priorities to support rapid troubleshooting, design, build and test iterations. Responsibilities:
- Provide power conversion products solutions through modeling, simulation, design and analysis circuits and their controls.
- Develop, test, and analyze topologies for medium- to high-power and high-density power converters.
- Analyze systems with respect to electrical, harmonic and thermal behavior.
- Design, layout and fabrication of printed circuit boards using KiCad, Eagle, Altium Designer or similar tools.
- Design and analyze high frequency magnetics.
- Troubleshooting EMI test setup issues.
- Work closely in a collaborative environment with the mechanical, electrical, and software engineering teams to achieve the required performance of the power converters across the operating range.
- Present routine findings verbally and in writing to team members.
- Travel for conferences, supplier visits, meetings or company offsite events as required (10%).
Qualifications:
- BS in electrical engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience designing high voltage power electronics circuitry
- Experience with high voltage systems and insulation (>5kV)
- Experience with isolated topologies, such as resonant converters, flyback and forward converters.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the design of electronic systems including proficiency in the use of software simulation software (PSpice, Multisim, LTSpice, etc.)
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Hardworking, enthusiastic attitude with a track record of overcoming challenges.
Bonus Skills and Experience:
- M.S. or PhD in electrical engineering, or relevant field.
- Knowledge of automated EMI test techniques, programming, and troubleshooting.
- Experience developing high-efficiency DC-DC power converters from concept to production.
- Experience with resonant inductive power transfer topologies.
- Experience with high-power RF systems.
- Experience with SolidWorks and COMSOL Multiphysics.
