What we are looking for:
As Business Development Analyst you will help lead Stem’s efforts to value and model battery energy storage in various electricity markets. Leveraging your technical core, you will apply your background and knowledge of energy storage, electricity markets, and power systems to create techno-economic analysis of various markets and specific project opportunities. This position requires close collaboration with internal stakeholders, such as, finance, marketing, sales, and product development, operations as well as Stem partners and customers.
Responsibilities:
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert for wholesale market macro trends, storage participation rules, and economic operations strategies.
- Create, maintain, and run sophisticated pricing and economic models (Excel/some Python) to assess energy storage projects under a variety of use cases
- Capture product requirements for Stem’s battery energy storage solutions in regulated and wholesale markets
- Drive quantitative analysis necessary to inform strategic market and program portfolio decisions
- Research and interpret market rules and regulations to define requirements for storage operation in ISO markets
- Act as a liaison between commercial and engineering stakeholders regarding new and existing offerings of various structures and in various market-settings
- Work closely with Stem’s partners and asset owners to analyze and recommend trading strategies across a variety of market products, including but not limited to: capacity, energy, and ancillary markets; T&D deferral; PPA optimization, etc.
- Support Legal in drafting and reviewing contract language related to offerings and strategies
- Track inbound RFP and partner activities and play a key role in Stem’s agile process for prioritizing and tracking work
- Work collaboratively with the Sales and Marketing teams to make updates to Salesforce as required to support new partnerships and utility programs
- Maintain opportunity pipeline and associated reports in Salesforce
- Keep up to date on renewable energy, energy storage, and utility market developments and support Stem market forecasts
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, economics, math, or similar technical subject (or equivalent practical experience)
- 2+ years of hands-on experience in the energy industry in a technical or quantitative role (finance, sales engineering, consulting, etc)
- Experience modeling contracted and merchant asset cash flows in wholesale energy markets
- Understanding of industry standard techniques for modeling storage economics such as linear programming
- Excellent verbal and written communication, team collaboration, and organizational skills
- Ability to work autonomously with excellent time management skills, focusing on key outcomes amidst competing priorities and tight deadlines
- Comfortable embracing ambiguity in a fast paced, collaborative environment
- Limited (less than 20%) travel
Desired Skills:
- Knowledge of ERCOT, PJM, MISO, CAISO or other ISO market structures
- Experience in large-scale energy project development or project finance
- Renewables focus is a plus
- Familiarity with common data science languages (Python/R) in order to leverage existing tools and run ad-hoc analyses
- Experience evaluating pros and cons of battery sizing and use cases
- MBA or Master’s Degree in a related field is a plus
