Dayenu: A Jewish Call to Climate Action

Dayenu is building a movement of American Jews confronting the climate crisis with spiritual audacity and bold political action. We mobilize Jewish support for climate solutions, build our collective power with national and global movements, and raise up a spiritual, religious, and moral voice.

The climate crisis is the defining challenge of our lifetimes. Confronting it demands all of us working together to reimagine and build a different kind of world — one that is just, equitable, and livable for us and for generations to come. Here’s Dayenu’s roadmap for how the American Jewish community can help build such a world:
- Mobilize the American Jewish community for bold political action. We show up when communities on the frontlines of the crisis need support, when students strike, when Congress is positioned to pass a bill, and when the broader climate movement lifts up its collective voice.
- Press candidates and elected officials to take real action. We build relationships with elected officials and candidates for office to make sure they know where we stand. We educate them — and voters — about what’s at stake, and we challenge them to be bold leaders in pursuit of climate solutions. For example, as part of our Chutzpah 20202 campaign, we mobilized hundreds of Jewish volunteers to contact thousands of climate-concerned voters in key states.
- End fossil fuel finance. Fossil fuel companies own massive oil, gas, and coal reserves that must stay underground and unburned if we are going to avoid irreversible, devastating climate change. That’s why we’re joining with partners to launch a campaign to end financial backing for the fossil fuel industry, focused on re-aligning Jewish institutional investments and calling on banks and investment houses like JP Morgan Chase and BlackRock to stop financing extraction.
- Advance comprehensive climate policy. We’re mobilizing Jewish support for critical federal and state climate policies that create the structural change we need, including clean energy and transportation initiatives that cut emissions, create jobs, and prioritize vulnerable communities. As our country recovers from the coronavirus, we can’t afford to rebuild the same polluting, inequitable, and fragile economy as before. We urge candidates and elected officials to take bold action to ensure that all of us — and future generations — can live healthy, safe and economically secure lives. We take inspiration and leadership from communities that are directly impacted by, and most vulnerable to, the climate crisis.
